Hey, I’m Logan, and I design.
What is Design to me?
I’ve come to understand design as the creation of an experience for another person. This definition is why design is an everyday passion of mine. When I design a product I am not just making decisions based on aesthetics, rather I am striving to create the optimal experience for an individual.
Why is design important to me?
Being a designer means I carry a lot of responsibility, and it’s something I take very seriously. Our lives are made up of moments, and within each of those moments, we may interact with dozens of man-made products. Each one of those products has the capability of ruining that moment with a poor experience. More importantly, each product manufactured has a lasting impact on the earth and its resources. As a designer, I must be aware of this and use my influence to create products that are intentional, useful, and considerate of those resources.
How do I design?
My design process always begins with a brief. It is only by establishing parameters that a design can be effective. Depending on the project this may be as simple as a question, “How can I…?” or include researched elements like market gaps, brand/user identities, and manufacturing/engineering constraints. Either way, I find having a solid foundation for the direction of a project to be absolutely necessary. When it comes to actual designing, my process is very hands-on. I find 2D sketching very useful for quick ideation, exploration, communication, and just getting an idea out. However, what I find most rewarding is using physical model making and CAD to really get into development and creative problem-solving for a concept. I thoroughly enjoy the cyclical process of refining a design and getting the details just right to create a perfect experience.
